Splice: Don't bother

Splice begins as a film about the dangers of science reaching too far and ends as a bad horror film. A scientist couple learns how to combine or "splice" DNA from several different animals to create a new species. They feel they are ready for the next step: adding human DNA, but their benefactors are more interested in the protein created by the already developed organism. Surprise, surprise… the scientists decide to splice the human DNA into the mixture anyway. The resulting being pushes all the boundaries of science and makes you think about the morality of scientifically creating something new, just because you can. Unfortunately, the movie attempts to show a “worst case scenario” of what may happen when messing around with nature by bringing in child abuse, sex, adultery, incest (of a sort) and even rape! This movie had the potential to be a mediocre cautionary tale. Instead, it became a mockery of itself, leaving the watcher feeling dirty and disgusted at the end of the film.
The predictable plot had holes the size of tunnels that the scriptwriters either did not notice or did not care enough about to cover up. However, the most disappointing piece about this film was Adrien Brody. An Oscar award winner for best actor (The Pianist 2002) in a movie of this caliber is just a crying shame. Oh how the mighty have fallen! It is difficult to discern whether he did the best he could with a horrible script or whether he just went through the motions because… he needed the money… he didn’t care enough... either way he will definitely not win an Academy Award for this performance… maybe a razzie.
THIS ONE IS DEFINITELY "DON'T BOTHER"
